Will the Indians be in playoff contention?
In my opinion, AL manager of the year, Terri Francona, better act fast to grab up all the talent there is left. We have many positions that we could improve on. We are overpaying significantly for a multitude of players. Michael Bourn is raking in an average of 12,000,000 per season. When you factor out how much he gets paid per home run, you see where the issues lie. He makes a whopping 2,000,000 dollars per home run last season. Jason Kipnis doesn't make anything remotely close to that and ended the 2013 season with 17 home runs and a .286 batting average.
2013 All-star Jason Kipnis is eligible for arbitration in 2015. However if we don't offer him a better contract soon, he probably will elect free agency. As of 2014, Kipnis is currently being paid 509,400 dollars per season. His projected salary post-arbitration is a seven year 40,500,000 dollar contract. Jason Kipnis was the second base starter in the beginning of the 2012 season. He was chosen as the alternate second baseman in the 2013 All-Star game for the American League. Kip helped the team to victory with a double that brought in a man to secure the 3-0 win.
We have yet to name the starter that will take the number five spot in the rotation. We have many promising candidates however we could benefit from a draft pick. There aren't any standout pitchers contending for the spot. Personally we would benefit most from Ubaldo Jimenez. Although he rejected the qualifying offer, we still could snatch him up for a bargain come spring training. Jimenez may have been a little over confident in his abilities seeing as he is looking to make 17-20 million per year for four years. Not only is that not going to happen in Cleveland, that's not going to happen anywhere! Lets talk pros and cons shall we.
